You can change the bank account a customer pays you from by Direct Debit in two ways: send them a secure link from your GoCardless account to update their bank details, which keeps their Direct Debit mandate in place, or cancel their mandate in membermeister and ask them to set up a new one.
For: team members with Full or Finance access. Updating the bank account also needs access to your GoCardless account.
How bank accounts, mandates and customers fit together
A Direct Debit mandate is the customer's permission for you to collect payments from their bank account. Each customer (usually the parent) has a mandate, and each mandate is tied to one bank account.
So when a customer wants to pay from a different bank account, you either move their existing mandate to the new bank account, or replace the mandate with a new one.
Option | What happens | Use it when |
Update the bank account in GoCardless | The customer enters their new bank details. The mandate stays in place. | The customer has a UK bank account. |
Cancel the mandate and request a new one | The old mandate, with its pending payments and subscriptions, is cancelled. The customer sets up a new mandate. | The customer's bank account isn't a UK one, or you'd rather manage it from membermeister. |
Update the bank account without cancelling the mandate
This only works for UK (Bacs) bank accounts.
Step 1: Find the customer in GoCardless
Log in to your GoCardless account.
Select Customers on the left.

Search for the customer by name in Search customers.

Select the customer to open their customer profile.

Step 2: Select their bank account
Under Bank Accounts, select the customer's bank account.
Step 3: Send the update link
Select the three dots in the top right corner.
Select Update bank account.

Read the message, then select Confirm and send link.

GoCardless emails the customer a secure link to enter their new bank details. Their active mandate moves to the new bank account, so you don't need to set anything up again in membermeister.
Cancel the mandate and request a new one
Cancelling the mandate also cancels the customer's pending payments and subscriptions, and payments already being processed may fail.
Open the profile of the person who set up the Direct Debit, usually the parent.
Select More, then select Cancel Direct Debit.
Read the warning, then select Cancel mandate.
Select More again, then select Request Direct Debit.
Select Send request.
The customer gets an email asking them to set up a new Direct Debit mandate, which they can do with their new bank details.
Tips
Subscriptions: if you cancelled the mandate, set up any subscriptions again once the new mandate is active, from More > New subscription on the profile.
